Istanbul: the bridge between two worlds

Istanbul photodiary: the harem

The most charming place in the ancient palace of the sultans - Topkapi palace in Istanbul - is undoubtedly the harem, a place that fed our imagination for centuries, without losing its evocative power. 
Contrary to popular belief, the harem was not a kind of brothel, but the private area reserved for the Sultan and his family (including, of course, his wives). Here lived his mother, the sultan himself and all his women, among beautiful gardens, fountains, pools, rooms richly decorated with blue and white tiles, gold, fabulous jewels (such as the giant chandelier completely covered with diamonds that you can still admire in the treasure room), porphyry columns, white marble, mother of pearl inlaid doors and carpets with extraordinary designs. All was protected by a system of rooms guarded day and night by blacks slaves eunuchs (yes, they were cut off the genital organ ...). Here selected girls were educated to become finally wives of some officials, or of the vizier, or of a commander or - for the most beautiful of them and fortunate - wives of the sultan. In any case, if a girl entered in here, had already assured their own future. :)

Il posto più affascinante all'interno dell'antico palazzo dei sultani - il palazzo Topkapı, a Istanbul - è senza dubbio l'harem,  un luogo che da secoli nutre l'immaginario collettivo senza perdere la sua forza evocativa. Contrariamente a quanto si crede, l'harem non era una specie di bordello, ma la zona privata riservata al sultano e alla sua famiglia (comprese, ovviamente, le sue mogli). Qui vivevano la madre del sultano, lo stesso sultano e le sue donne, fra giardini meravigliosi, fontane, piscine, stanze riccamente decorate da piastrelle bianche e blu, ori, gioielli da favola (come il gigantesco candeliere completamente ricoperto di diamanti che si può ammirare tutt'oggi nella stanza dei tesori), colonne di porfido, marmi bianchi, porte incastonate di madreperla e tappeti dai disegni straordinari, protetti da un sistema di anticamere sorvegliate notte e giorno da schiavi neri eunuchi (sì, veniva loro tagliato l'organo genitale...). Qui le ragazze (bambine) prescelte seguivano un percorso di studi e un'educazione che le avrebbe portate a diventare mogli di qualche funzionario, del visir, di un comandante o - per le più belle e fortunate - il non plus ultra: mogli del sultano. In ogni caso, se una bambina entrava qui dentro, aveva già la strada spianata e il futuro assicurato. :)

Turkish style

Along the crowded and hot streets of Istanbul I used to walk with a printed scarf tied around my head, and it was such an an assimilation to the local habit (Istanbul is a cosmopolitan megalopolis where several religions and ethnicities converging from every part of the world, but islamic women who cover their heads are still a lot), and it was a solution to protect myself from possible sunstrokes as well: I adopted this useful and fashionable trick last year in Spain and Croatia.

For the rest of the outfit, comfortable sandals ankle-tied were needed, as a capable bag to carry everything else, fancy harem cotton pants (very fresh and comfy) and tank tops in several colors (you can find them in every H&M store for a few money).

This look worked very well.... what do you think about?

Per le vie calde e affollate di Istanbul mi aggiravo con un foulard annodato sul capo, non tanto per uniformarmi al costume predominante (pur essendo una megalopoli cosmopolita in cui convergono etnie e religioni da ogni parte del mondo, a Istanbul le donne di religione islamica col capo coperto sono comunque moltissime), quanto per proteggermi da possibili colpi di sole, sistema utile e anche stiloso che avevo adottato già l'anno passato in Spagna e in Croazia.

Per il resto dell'abbigliamento si sono resi necessari sandali comodi annodati alla caviglia, una borsa portatutto, pantaloni stile harem in cotone fantasia leggerissimo (e freschissimo) e tank top in vari colori (li trovate a pochi euro da H&M).

Il look ha funzionato alla grande.... e voi, che ne pensate?

Cosmopolitan girl: Madrid, Paris, London

Merry Autumn, the solution to travel

Travelling on Ryanair flights this summer, I stumbled in the engineering dilemma (well known by you too) to pack all the minimum necessary inside of just one hand luggage... Considering that 3 or 4 shoes for 6 days are the minimum and considering every pair of shoes needs its own bag we can easily conclude Ryanair is not right for us or we have to leave at home the major part of our fashion heritage. Topping the list of things to remove from our burden: the bags.
Well, I'm glad to carry a good news: there is the solution.

Viaggiando spesso con Ryanair, quest'estate, mi sono imbattuta nel fatidico dilemma con implicazioni matematico-ingegneristiche (che sarà noto anche a voi) di far stare tutto il minimo indispensabile in un solo bagaglio a mano... Se considerate che per 6 giorni sono necessarie almeno 3 o 4 paia di scarpe e che ad ogni scarpa si accompagna una borsa... è facile arrivare alla conclusione che o Ryanair non è la compagnia aerea che fa per noi oppure che dovremo lasciare a casa buona parte del nostro patrimonio fashion. In cima alla lista di cose da eliminare dal nostro fardello: le borse.
Bene, sono portatrice di una lieta notizia per tutte voi: c'è una soluzione.
